Private businesses, individuals and public institutions regularly seek Peter Ramsay’s advice and representation on a vast array of legal subjects.
Peter has astutely represented his clients’ interests for over thirty-seven years on matters ranging from complex operating agreements such as the Central Vancouver Island 911 Service to litigation in British Columbia’s civil and criminal trial courts. He has litigated with respect to estate matters, damages, land use, labour, and employment cases in the British Columbia Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. He advises individuals and families on estate planning and estate litigation issues. Peter possesses a Bachelor of Commerce degree (University of British Columbia), a Bachelor of Laws degree (University of British Columbia), and a Master of Laws degree (University of British Columbia). His Master’s thesis was on the Wills Variation Act. He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1970. Peter is also formally trained as a mediator, and promotes the use of alternative dispute resolution to problem solve. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1999. Peter has taught law courses at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and Malaspina University-College. He presently teaches wills and estates, trusts, real property, torts and professional responsibility at the University of British Columbia Law School. In addition, Mr. Ramsay has served as a Bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia and as both as a board member and the Chairman of the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia. He is presently the Vice-Chairman of the British Columbia Law Institute. He recently chaired the Succession Law Reform Project for the British Columbia Law Institute which delivered a 345-page report to the British Columbia Attorney General. He now chairs a project committee tasked with making recommendations for the reform of the court probate and administration rules. He is a member of the Ethics Committee of the Law Society of British Columbia. In 1980 and 1981, in addition to being elected to serve as a member of the Regional District of Nanaimo, Peter was Chairman of the Mid-Island Public Employers Association and was responsible for collective bargaining with more than 1,500 public sector employees. He has also been a director and President of the Mid-Island Consumer Services Co-operation (a retail co-op with more than $39 million in sales) and a board member of a number of community organizations.
